Diocese helps tsunami victims
YOUNGSTOWN -- Local individuals and groups have donated $181,595.38 as of Feb. 4 to support the work of Catholic Relief Services responding to the victims of the tsunami in South Asia.
The Office of Social Action of the Diocese of Youngstown said Catholic Relief Services continues to provide lifesaving food, water, shelter, medicine and household necessities to tsunami survivors in South Asia.
Staff and local partners are working in the hardest-hit regions to assess the devastation and help survivors take the first steps toward rebuilding their shattered communities.
Catholic Relief Services responded immediately with lifesaving food, medicine, clean water, emergency shelter, basic hygiene and household supplies.
In addition, the CRS board of directors committed $25 million in private emergency funding for immediate and continuing efforts to help save lives and assist communities in rebuilding after the catastrophe. Bishop Thomas J. Tobin of the Diocese of Youngstown is a member of the national board of directors of Catholic Relief Services.
