The Titans bounced back from Saturday's loss.
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- One characteristic of a good basketball team is its ability to bounce back from a disappointing loss to get back into the win column.
After Saturday's frustrating 70-62 setback to Grove City, Westminster (14-6, 5-1), facing Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Thiel on the road, did just that as the Titans rolled over the Tomcats, 82-54, Wednesday night in Beeghly Gymnasium.
"The kids came in tonight definitely focused," said Titan coach Rosanne Scott. "We talked about it right before the game how we have to come into each game and play hard. The one thing we did much better tonight was execute a lot better offensively. We still have a couple of glitches we have to fix, and if we can do that, we should continue to get better with each game."
Different game, same result
In the first meeting, Thiel (5-17, 1-6) didn't score a single point in the first 13-plus minutes while the Titans were busy building up a 19-0 lead. This time around, the first half was the same story for the Tomcats as they didn't get on the scoreboard until Kenecia Streeter made the second of two free throws seven minutes into the game.
While the Thiel drought continued, the Titans were busy ripping off 16 unanswered points to begin the game en route to a 40-20 half-time lead.
"We watched the film of the first game and the one thing that stood out was that we were able to frustrate them with our pressure all over the court," said Scott. "We tried that right from the beginning and it worked out real well for us tonight. Not only did that cause them to make some key turnovers, but it also got us back into the type of game we like to play. If we can do that, then we don't always have to rely on our halfcourt offense to get us going."
Run receives answer
Although Thiel cut its deficit to 17 four minutes in, the Titans answered right back with another streak of 17 unanswered points to take a 61-27 lead and before cruising to the win.
"Every team is going to make a run at us, we know that," said Scott. "When that happens and we are able to refocus like we did tonight, that is a sign of maturity.
Leading the Titans were Mary Jane Eaton and Erica Tallo with 14 points apiece. For Thiel, Fontella Jones (Farrell) matched Tallo and Eaton for game-high honors with 14 points, and Kristen Benjamin completed her double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
