Kent St. 57, Akron 54
AKRON -- Jason Edwin led Kent State with 18 points, and none were more important than a pair of dunks in the final minute. Edwin gave Kent State (16-7, 8-4 Mid American Conference) a 55-52 lead with 24.2 seconds remaining with one of the slams, but Akron's Rick McFadden stole the ball and hit a layup to pull within one point with 10.4 seconds to go. Akron (13-7, 7-5) -- which only had three second-half team fouls -- fouled on the next two inbounds plays before Scott Cutley found Edwin for a break-away dunk with 7.4 seconds remaining. Akron's Bubba Walther then missed a 3-point heave from half court. DeAndre Haynes and Jay Youngblood each added 10 points for Kent State, and Nate Gerwig grabbed 10 rebounds. Romeo Travis led Akron with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while McFadden finished with 13 points and Darryl Peterson scored 12.
Toledo 58, Bowling Green 50
TOLEDO -- Sammy Villegas had 11 points to lead Toledo. Villegas hit a 3-pointer and another jumper during a 12-2 Toledo run, giving the Rockets (11-10, 7-5 MAC) a 26-13 lead with 7:55 to play in the first half. Toledo led 34-23 at halftime and never trailed during the second half. Bowling Green closed to within 34-31 by scoring the first eight points in the second half, but couldn't get any closer while hitting only 8-of-27 field goals and 1-of-11 free throws. Steven Wright had 23 points and eight rebounds for Bowling Green (13-7, 7-5), while John Reimold scored 11 for the Falcons. The Rockets scored 23 points off 21 Falcon turnovers while committing 14 turnovers themselves.
Miami (Ohio) 54, Ball St. 52
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Nathan Peavy's basket as time expired gave Miami the victory. Peavy, standing alone in the lane, grabbed the ball after a miss by Chet Mason from almost half-court. He quickly put up an 8-footer that went through the net to give the RedHawks the victory. Referee Tom Clark ruled that Peavy's shot was good, although officials were unable to review the play at the scorer's table because the game was not televised. The loss knocked the Cardinals (12-8, 7-5 MAC) into a three-way tie for second place, a half-game behind Western Michigan. Miami (15-5, 10-2) remained in first place in the MAC East.
Marshall 81, Eastern Michigan 75
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Mark Patton scored 21 points to lead Marshall. The win was Marshall's (5-16, 2-10 MAC) second straight in conference play. Eastern Michigan (10-12, 3-9) was led by Michael Ross with a career-high 23 points, in addition to 16 from Markus Austin and 14 points from John Bowler.
N. Illinois 65, Cent. Michigan 46
DEKALB, Ill. -- Anthony Maestranzi scored a team-high 16 points to lead Northern Illinois. Also for Northern Illinois (9-12, 5-8 MAC), Todd Peterson scored 13 points, Mike McKinney had 12 and James Hughes added 11. Central Michigan (7-14, 2-11) was led by Kevin Nelson, who had 22 points.
