Library accepts books
AUSTINTOWN -- The Friends of the Austintown Library will accept books for the book sale every first and third Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the library. Books must be in good condition and of interest to other readers. The Friends next meeting will be at 10 a.m. Feb. 21 in the library meeting room.
HIP HOP awarded grant
YOUNGSTOWN -- Associated Neighborhood Centers was recently awarded a $30,000 grant from the Raymond John Wean Foundation to support its Project HIP HOP (Hope Is Power, Helping Our People).
HIP HOP, an after-school program at McGuffey Centre, is a juvenile delinquency prevention effort for youth aged 12-17. Programs include parent and family support, BART -- Becoming A Responsible Teen, violence prevention, intervention and tutoring. Youths will be involved in writing scripts, choreographing dances and designing costumes.

Garbage plan changes
McDONALD -- The village will be implementing a new garbage removal plan.
Residents are being issued 96-gallon trash containers. Residents are asked to follow the instructions sent to them by the garbage contractor, Wolford's Inc.
Garbage pickup is unlimited. However, residents are being asked to utilize the recycling bins located at the village garage to dispose of recyclable waste.
Wolford's Inc. will also be providing individual pickup service for senior citizens or handicapped residents who cannot utilize the new can. To schedule this service, or for more information, call Wolford's at (330) 530-3200.
Zoning secretary
CANFIELD -- Lenore Banks has joined the Canfield Township staff in the new position of zoning secretary. She will work with Zoning Administrator Dave Morrison.
The position was created because "explosive growth in Canfield requires it," said Trustee Bill Reese. Banks comes to the township from a position at US Airways. She also will perform administrative duties.
Library hosts knitting
EAST PALESTINE -- Gail Bable will teach classes on how to knit or crochet Monday evenings at the East Palestine Public Library. The classes will run from 6 to 7:30 the second and fourth Mondays of the month and begin March 14. Registration is necessary. Call the library at (330) 426-3778. Classes are free. Beginning projects will be dish cloths and scarves.
Labor Day car show set
LIBERTY -- The Mahoning Valley Mustangs, based in Youngstown, will host a Mustang Club of America 2005 Grand National Car Show on Labor Day weekend at the Holiday Inn MetroPlex. A press release from the local club says more than 375 Mustangs from across the United States and Canada are expected to appear at this first show in Ohio. Proceeds will go to Tod Children's Hospital.
Groups check car seats
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- In observance of Child Passenger Safety Week, UPMC Horizon and Mercer County Safe Kids will hold a free car seat check from 3 to 7 p.m. Feb. 18 at Greenville Motors, 93 Sharon Road.
Amy Higgins, a Horizon Health education specialist and a certified child passenger safety technician, will be on hand along with other certified car seat technicians to examine car seats and determine whether they are installed in vehicles properly.
The hospital also will distribute 38 car booster seats to low-income families identified by local agencies.
