BOARD OF CONTROL Contracts for arena approved

One of the change orders will help circuses come to the arena.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city board of control awarded two more contracts for companies doing work at the Youngstown Convocation Center and also approved payment for additional work involved with building the structure.
At its Thursday meeting, the board awarded a $1.29 million contract to Lencyk Masonry of Boardman for masonry work for the $42 million arena under construction between the Market Street and South Avenue bridges.
The board also awarded the contract for the center's doors, frames and hardware to Cleveland Architectural Hardware of Broadview Heights at its low-bid price of $115,599.
Change orders
Carmen S. Conglose Jr., deputy director of public works, said some supplemental design changes resulted in change orders for additional or unforeseen work at the center.
Marucci & amp; Gaffney Excavating of Youngstown will get an additional $5,639 to install a retention wall drain on the arena's north end, Conglose said. A.P. O'Horo Co. of Youngstown's change order for $4,358 is to install structural steel elements in the arena floor to allow the tying down of facilities needed when circuses come to town.
Merrilees Electric Co. of New Castle, Pa., needed an additional $1,906 to make minor rearrangements of underground electrical utilities, and Marucci also gets an additional $12,168 to extend a utility trunk line for a telecommunications tie-in at the arena. Conglose explained the tie-in is an SBC requirement the city learned about after the contract was awarded.
The board -- the mayor, law director and finance director -- also made slight amendments to the professional services contract with Gallagher-Pipino of Boardman, which is the risk manager and insurance agency for the convocation center.
