CANFIELD -- Two Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center students are headed for Washington, D.C., next month to participate in a five-day national SkillsUSA(Ok) leadership program.
Bill Herron of Canfield and Kaila(Ok) Kaluza(Ok) of Boardman were elected to represent northeast Ohio during the Ohio SkillsUSA Fall Leadership Conference in Columbus in November.
Herron is a senior in the criminal justice program and was elected regional parliamentarian, while Kaluza, a junior in the medical occupations program, was elected regional ambassador.
The Regional Officer Training Institute will run Jan. 15-20 in Washington.
Ohio SkillsUSA is a career-technical organization serving more than 34,000 students and advisors. It is affiliated nationally with SkillsUSA.
Financial aid workshop
BROOKFIELD -- The high school guidance department is sponsoring its annual financial aid workshop at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the cafeteria. The workshop will provide information to students and their parents on grants, loans, and scholarships available for post-secondary education.
Computer boot camp
BOARDMAN -- Individuals looking to learn the ins and outs of computing can attend a week-long Computer Boot Camp at Youngstown State University's Metro College in Southwoods Commons in January. Classes will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The full week of classes costs $398; individual workshops are $99 each. ALA workshop
MONACA, Pa. -- Penn State Beaver Adult Literacy Action will host a free, two-day Tutor Training Workshop Jan. 14 and Jan. 21. Both sessions will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the ALA office in the Professional Arts Building, 336 College Avenue, Beaver. A working lunch will be provided each day. Participants must attend both sessions.
The workshop will provide staff overviews of the ALA program, which covers a diverse area of topics, including learning to teach reading and assisting students with GED preparations. Upon completing the workshop, participants will receive a ProLiteracy(Ok) America Volunteer Tutor Training Certificate of Completion. Advance registration is required and must be received by Jan. 11. BGSU financial aid
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- A financial aid workshop will be held Jan. 7 on Bowling Green State University campus for students admitted to the university for the 2006-07 academic year and their parents.
The program, which will be held in the Lenhart Grand Ballroom of the BGSU Union, will begin at 12:30 p.m. with registration and will conclude at 3:30 with an optional tour of the campus.
One highlight will be a detailed overview of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. In addition to providing tips to prevent common mistakes, BGSU staff will be available to answer questions about completing the financial aid application form. The workshop also will cover the basics of financial aid, such as how financial need is determined and how the FAFSA is used to calculate the expected family contribution.
