Judge gives jail report a deadline extension

YOUNGSTOWN -- U.S. District Judge David D. Dowd Jr. granted a request Friday by Mahoning County to file its final report on remedies for the jail by Feb. 3. The report had been due by year's end.
The county's criminal justice working group has been meeting for months in an effort to come up with ways to make the once-overcrowded jail constitutionally sound. The jail population was reduced 10 months ago after inmates won a class-action lawsuit in Akron federal court.
