SteelHounds fall again
Youngstown will play on the road again tonight against Colorado.
WICHITA, Kan. -- The Youngstown SteelHounds' road woes continued in Wichita on Thursday as they fell to the Thunder 5-2.
Kris Wiebe scored a goal and had two assists and Sebastien Laplante made 34 saves to earn his 12th victory of the season for Wichita (16-7-4).
Youngstown, which lost Tuesday to the Memphis RiverKings, 3-1, to launch its current road trip, will play at the Colorado Eagles at 8:05 p.m. today.
After each team failed on power play chances in Thursday's game, the Thunder took a 1-0 lead as a bouncing puck worked its way to the side of the net and Kris Wiebe swiped it past David St. Germain for his sixth goal. Joe Blaznek -- who has 43 points this season -- and Matt Hanson got the assists. Wichita outshot the Hounds 10-8 in the period.
Blanked in second
Youngstown (11-16-1) was shut out again in the second period. The Thunder took a 2-0 lead with a one-timer by defenseman Ryan Fairbarn from the right circle that beat St. Germain for Fairbarn's sixth goal of the season. Jason Duda and Wiebe got the assists at the 5:15 mark. The Hounds pressured Sebastien Laplante for 14 shots on goal but were unable to find the back of the net.
Youngstown made it 2-1 with a power play goal at the 2:05 mark of the final period by Chris Shaffer. It was his second goal of the season. J.F. Labarre and Scott Barnes got the assists.
The Thunder answered with a power play goal by Joe Blaznek (his 25th) at the 5:02 mark. Wichita made it 4-1 when Chris Bain scored his first professional goal at 11:10. Tyler Liebel made it 5-1 with his eighth of the season.
Youngstown added a late power play goal at the 17:02 mark. Jonathan Gagnon scored his eighth of the season, assisted by Chris Richards and Jeff Christian.
The Hounds were 2-for-10 on the power play, while Wichita went 1-for-8. Youngstown outshot the Thunder 36-33. Sebastien Laplante (12-5-3) made 34 saves. St. Germain (7-11-1) made 29 saves.
