YOUNGSTOWN -- The Pig Iron Literary and Art Works will sponsor 32 public writing and arts events in 2006.
The scheduled events include:
USecond Tuesday Open Poetry Reading at Cedars Cafe on Commerce Street in downtown Youngstown (12 sessions).
UWork-In-Progress Writing Workshop at Pig Iron Press on Phelps Street, on the fourth Wednesday of each month (12 sessions).
UAnnual Community Street Festival on North Phelps Street, with artists bazaar, entertainment and concessions, on July 29.
UAnnual Poetry Slam, a competitive poetry reading with prizes, on Aug. 16.
UThree sessions of Poetry Round-Robin, an informal reading where everyone attending reads three poems, their own or favorites, in continuous round-robin, at Pig Iron Press on March 1, May 23 and Oct. 4. The new Round-Robin, launched in November, is scheduled to become a regular event downtown.
UPig Iron Poets, Youngstown's oldest active troupe of performing poets, will perform three times: at First Night Youngstown, Saturday, at Pig Iron Press, with shows at 7 and 9 p.m.; at the YSU Summer Festival of the Arts, July 8, at the McDonough Museum of the Arts; and at the Phelps Street Community Festival on July 29.
The Pig Iron Literary and Art Works hosted 30 events in 2005. Its largest event last year was its Street Festival, which drew an estimated 2,000 visitors, featuring 35 artists and exhibitors, and eight hours of entertainment.

The agency's events are family-appropriate: age 10 to participate in poetry readings; age 14 for workshops. Most events are free; the Writing Workshop requests a $3 reservation fee. For information, call Pig Iron Press at (330) 747-6932.
