NORTH LIMA -- Dan Holloway came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points and Jeff Pilcher and Zac Bierdeman added 15 and 11 points respectively as the South Range High boys basketball team defeated the Crestview Rebels 62-53 on Tuesday.
Holloway also had five rebounds and five assists for the Raiders (1-3). The Rebels (4-2) saw their four-game winning streak snapped.
"I'd have to give all of the credit to our players because they never quit, kept their heads up and have continued to work hard during this start to our season," Raiders coach Jeff Hammond said.
"Playing Springfield Local and Mineral Ridge at the outset has only made us a better team. There was a good flow to the game for us tonight. After seeing what [Jerry] Einsiedel and [Tony] Amabile did against Lowellville, it only increased our awareness to cover them.
"[Dan] Holloway had some critical rebounds for us early and that pretty much set the tone. These are two schools close to each other in proximity and this is fast becoming a great rivalry.
"It was a tremendous atmosphere in which to play tonight."
Off to quick start
Holloway scored nine of the Raiders' first 13 points while South Range caused nine Rebel turnovers to take a 15-8 first quarter lead.
Bierdeman and Steve Whitfield then scored five points each in the second quarter as the Raiders again held the Rebels to eight points, giving South Range a 26-16 halftime lead.
The Raider defense held Crestview to just 5 of 21 shooting from the field in the first 16 minutes, while the Rebels' 16 points at intermission was nowhere near the 58 they registered against Lowellville their last time out.
"You have to give South Range a lot of credit. They played a very intense game at both ends of the court," Rebels coach Rick Gates said.
"They are as athletic a team as we will play this year. They hit their outside shots, especially early, and we just couldn't connect on ours.
"Our players have a lot of respect for both their basketball and football programs, and really wanted this game badly after their football team defeated us twice this past season.
"We'll watch this film, learn from our mistakes and hopefully be able to make the necessary in-game adjustments to make us a better team."
Rebels rally
Sean Seidler's only points of the game, two 3-pointers in the third period, helped the Raiders build a 47-28 lead, but Einsiedel's five points keyed a 17-1 Crestview run as the Rebels pulled to within 48-45 with 4:29 remaining. The Rebel defense held South Range without a bucket for a span of 5:16.
After pulling to within three, the Raiders went on an 8-0 run to take a 56-45 lead and held on from there.
South Range was 25 of 65 from the field while Crestview could manage just 18 of 56 field goal attempts.
The Rebels held a 31-26 rebound advantage with Crestview's Andy Walton and Travis Gustafson hauling down a game-high eight caroms.
