Man shot after 2 othersburst into apartment
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man was shot in an apartment after two men burst through the back door and demanded money around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday at 1462 Woodcrest Ave.
The victim, Daniel Peek, 30, of Dorothy Avenue said he, his stepfather and a friend were in the dinette area drinking beer and playing music when the back screen door flew open. Two men with black headbands around their lower faces came in and ordered the men to give them all their money.
Peek told police he started to fight the intruders and pushed them out the back door. As he shut the door, he heard two shots. He was shot in the arm and grazed in the head, the report said.
His stepfather took him to Forum Health Northside Medical Center emergency room.
Man suspected in theftof gifts to be arraigned
VERNON -- A Warren man accused of stealing gifts from under a tree Christmas Eve will be arraigned Thursday in Trumbull County Eastern District Court in Brookfield.
Ron Peters, 38, of Idylwild Street, is being held in Trumbull County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond. Peters is accused of breaking into the state Route 7 home of Barbara Soles on Saturday while she was at work. Presents that were under the tree and in the basement were stolen, she told Trumbull County sheriff's deputies.
Warren police went to Peters' residence Sunday in response to a disturbance call. They noticed newly bought merchandise and became suspicious. Police took Soles to the Warren residence, where she was able to identify some of the goods as being stolen from her home.
West Liberty shooting
GIRARD -- City police are investigating a Christmas Day shooting on West Liberty Street that left one home riddled with bullets. A resident at 553 W. Liberty St. told police he was awakened by the sound of gunfire at 6 a.m. The man told police he later found six bullet holes in the door and walls of the house.
Man shot, hospitalized
YOUNGSTOWN -- Reginald White, 35, of Trumbull Court, Liberty, was still in the emergency room at St. Elizabeth Health Center late Tuesday afternoon after telling police he was shot in the leg earlier in the day in the 200 block of Griffith Street. White said he was waiting for a girlfriend around 12:01 a.m. when he saw four or five men standing down the street and heard two shots.
As he began to walk away, he realized he had been shot, reports show. He walked to the hospital. No motive was given for the shooting, and suspects weren't identified.
House ransacked
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Three men forced their way into a Mercer Street home and shot one of the residents in the head.
New Castle Police said Greg Turner, 30, was shot in the left cheek and the bullet apparently went out through the right cheek. Police said he was taken to UPMC in Pittsburgh for treatment, but the hospital had no record of his admittance.
Police said the home was ransacked when they arrived early Christmas morning.
A woman in the house told police there was a knock at the door around 3 a.m. and Turner answered the door. She heard yelling and found three men in her kitchen, police said.
The men shot Turner and then forced the woman on the ground before ransacking the house and leaving, police said.
Police said they found Turner was wanted in Michigan for firearms offenses and a probation violation. They alerted Michigan authorities of his whereabouts.
Auto club donations
SHARON, Pa. -- The Antique Automobile Club of America, Shenango Valley Region, has donated $2,000 each to the Shenango Valley Children's Transplant Fund, which helps families defray medical costs not covered by insurance; and the Mercer County Historical Society for a project involving the Twombly cyclecarbuilt in Sharon in the early 1900s.
The automobile club also gave $500 each to the Salvation Army and the Community Food Warehouse of the Shenango Valley.
