YSU graduate's penguin design on display in Kilcawley Center

YOUNGSTOWN -- The final penguin in the Penguin Parade public arts project is on display in the Cafaro Lobby of Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University.
"Campus Core," designed and painted by YSU graduate Erin Maloney, depicts landmarks new and old on the YSU campus painted on a 5-foot-tall fiberglass penguin.
The Penguin Parade public arts project in 2004 featured 30, 5-foot-tall penguin sculptures that were colorfully decorated by local artists and auctioned to the public in fall 2004. The penguins are on display across the Mahoning Valley.
Kilcawley Center, YSU's student center, bought a blank penguin statue a year ago with intentions that it be designed and artistically transformed by a current YSU student and displayed in the center.
Eighteen students submitted designs in the "Last Penguin Standing" contest.
Maloney's design, which includes an acrylic montage featuring YSU campus buildings such as Jones Hall and the new Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center, was selected in May.
A 1997 graduate of Poland Seminary High School, Maloney graduated from YSU in May with a bachelor's degree in graphic design. She now works at Rubenstein & amp; Associates in Liberty.
