Waiting lists for summer schools?

The program allows students to pursue a special interest at college.
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- High school students in Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties can apply to attend one of the eight 2006 Pennsylvania Governor's Schools of Excellence being offered next summer.
The schools are full-scholarship residential programs held on college campuses across the state.
Students are selected on the basis of their artistic or academic talent, and admission is highly competitive. Last year, only 780 of 3,875 applicants were accepted.
The state picks up the tab for tuition, room and board, classroom materials and program activities.
The schools offer students a living/learning community in which they pursue a particular area of interest with master teachers who are also practitioners in their fields.
It also offers college and career advice and leadership training, and many Pennsylvania colleges and universities offer exclusive admissions scholarships to graduates of the Governor's Schools.
More than 16,000 students have gone through the schools in their 30-year history, including such notables as actor Kevin Bacon, best-selling novelist Alice Sebold and Pulitzer Prize winning music composer Aaron Jay Kernis.
The application period runs through January. Forms are available at all public and private high school guidance offices or on the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Web site at www.pde.pa.us, using the keyword "schools of excellence".
