Sav-A-Lot becomes latest target in string of S. Side holdups

One suspect wore a black ski mask and another used a red hoodie.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Add Sav-A-Lot to the list of South Side holdups.
Just past closing time Thursday, around 9:10 p.m., roughly $2,000 was taken in a holdup at the store at 2725 South Ave., reports show.
Three men, one described as "very heavy, like Fat Albert," in a black ski mask and one who used a red hoodie to cover most of his face, took part in the robbery, police said. The only description of the third suspect is that he was wearing blue pants and black Nike shoes.
Four cashiers and two stock boys were in the store at the time of the holdup.
One cashier leaving the store was ushered back inside by the men, one of whom held a gun to her back and led her to the rear of the store, where the stock boys were working.
Another cashier, seeing the men coming into the store, ran toward the service center, fell to the floor and covered up. The suspect wearing the blue pants and black Nikes stood over her.
Kicked in door
Two cashiers counting cash in register drawers at the service center hit the floor. The robber in the ski mask kicked open the locked door to the service center, kicked a cashier and ordered her at gunpoint to get him money from the drawers, reports show.
The suspects may have fled east on Indianola Avenue, police said.
Since late October, there have been more than two dozen armed robberies on the South Side, including several businesses, detectives have said. In response, police have been working special robbery details on Market Street and South Avenue.
