GIRLS BASKETBALL Shields scores career-high 34 to lead Howland



HOWLAND -- Ellie Shields scored a career-high 34 points for the Howland High girls basketball team, which took a 48-26 halftime lead en route to an 80-67 victory over Ashtabula Edgewood on Friday.
Shields, whose previous high was 20 points, also grabbed 17 of the Tigers' 45 rebounds. Melissa Airhart added 16 points, 13 rebounds and six assists for Howland (6-1), while Danielle Ryan had 10 points and Carly Sabat had eight points and seven assists.
Trisha Dreslinski scored 22 points to lead Edgewood (6-3).
Sharon 43, Sharpsville 30
SHARPSVILLE -- Sharon had all five starters score with junior Aryn Christman and senior Janine McDonald getting 14 and 13, respectively, as the Tigers (8-1, 3-0) won their fifth straight.
McDonald had seven of her team's 28 rebounds.
Kasey Gardner had 18 points for Sharpsville (4-4, 1-2) in the D-10, Region 1, Class AA game. Gardner also had nine of Sharpsville's 30 rebounds.
