ACT test set for Feb. 11
YOUNGSTOWN -- College-bound students have until Jan. 6 to register to take the ACT exam on the next nationwide test date -- Feb. 11. The cost of the test is $29 ($43 if students choose to take the optional writing test), and registration is available online at www.actstudent.org.
Registration materials are also available from high school guidance counselors. The exam takes about three hours. ACT scores are used by colleges to help determine whether students are ready for college-level work.
Scholarship awarded
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Katherine Menhorn, a junior music education major at Westminster College, recently received the $500 Phillip H. Inman Excellence in Choral Conducting Art Scholarship from the Beaver Valley Choral Society.
The Beaver Valley Choral Society established this scholarship to celebrate Inman's lifelong dedication to excellence in the choral arts of the Beaver County region in Pennsylvania.
Menhorn is a daughter of Norman and Joan Menhorn, Berlin, and a graduate of Berlin Brothersvalley High School. She is a mezzo-soprano member of the Westminster College Concert Choir, where she is treasurer, and Chamber Singers. Menhorn accompanies the Westminster College Men's Chorus and is the Field Commander for the Titan Marching Band. She is president of the Westminster chapter of the American Choral Director Association.
Pupils donate to needy
YOUNGSTOWN -- Children at East Middle School donated groceries and canned goods to 16 needy families as part of the school's annual Christmas giving program.
Canned goods and other nonperishable items were donated to the Salvation Army, 102 JAMZ radio station, and New Bethel Baptist Church. The school also gave donated toys to the Rescue Mission, which presented them to children whose families are aided by the mission.
Belinky to attend forum
YOUNGSTOWN -- David Belinky, a fifth-grader at Akiva Academy on Gypsy Lane, has been selected to participate in the People to People World Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C., Sept. 11-17, 2006. The program brings a select group of children to Washington to explore monuments and institutions as well as examine how successful leaders develop strategies, make decisions, build consensus and foster change. Daniel is the son of Cynthia and Mark Belinky of Boardman.
Scholarship applications
BOARDMAN -- Applications are now being accepted for the Father Iati Memorial Scholarship for college freshmen. The scholarships are awarded to freshmen of Italian descent on the basis of need, character and scholarship.
This is the 20th anniversary of the Rev. Joseph L. Iati's death and three scholarships worth $2,000 each will be awarded. Applications are available by writing to Dr. Joseph Altinger, 6838 Tanglewood Drive, Youngstown, OH 44512.
Eighth-graders serve as pages at Capitol
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Four eighth-graders from St. Michael School recently served as guest pages for a week at the state Capitol in Harrisburg. Nicholas Cianci, Naomi Marshall, Jenna Green and John Stumpff were the guests of Sen. Bob Robbins of Greenville, R-50th. As part of their duties, they delivered correspondence between legislative offices and attended meetings and a session of the Senate.
Credit union scholarships
WARREN -- Applications are now available for the Seven Seventeen Credit Union college scholarship program.
The credit union awards six scholarships of $1,000 each every year and gives one of those awards to each of the following schools: University of Akron, Kent State University main campus, Kent State University Trumbull Campus, Kent State University Salem Campus, Kent State University Stark Campus and Youngstown State University.
Each school selects its scholarship recipient based on grade point average, school and community involvement and letters of recommendation. Applications may be picked up at any of the credit union's offices and the guidance offices of area high schools.
To be eligible, a recipient, or one of his or her parents or guardians, must be a member of the Seven Seventeen Credit Union. The credit union has offices in Warren, Howland, Cortland, Vienna, Hubbard, Boardman, Austintown, Kent and Canton.
Malone campus tour
CANTON -- Malone College will have a Discovery Day for prospective students Jan. 23. High school juniors and seniors are invited to campus to get a look at Malone's course offerings. The visit includes a campus tour, an admissions presentation and lunch with a professor from the prospective student's chosen major.
