Women's rugby team poses for calendar
OBERLIN -- Members of a women's rugby club at Oberlin College who posed semi-nude for a 2006 calendar hope to challenge the way people think about women playing a traditionally male sport.
"We aren't trying to sell ourselves, but we wanted to address important issues, like how women athletes are depicted sexually, and gender roles in sports," said team member Alia Kate. "It's about our empowerment as both women and athletes."
Sixteen of the club's 30 members posed for the self-published calendar, which was released Monday as a fundraiser. About 350 of the 1,000 calendars have been sold.
Photos show the women posing with rugby balls, pompoms and other props. Each photo also is accompanied by a statement about teamwork, confidence, courage and safety.
"We hope people will be drawn in by the photos, then think seriously about the statements," Kate said.
Team members checked with faculty and college administrators before beginning the project to be sure they weren't violating any rules.
Rafael Capo, a sophomore majoring in sociology, said the calendar was done in good taste, but questioned its intent. "I thought it was just a joke and didn't understand the messages they were trying to send," Capo said.

Middleweight champ welcomed back
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Jermain Taylor took the microphone, thanked the crowd for its support, then brought the house down with a bold promise.
Taylor hopes his next fight will be in front of his home fans in Arkansas, and if that happens, he's pretty confident about the result.
"Whoever comes to Little Rock, I'm knocking him out!" Taylor said.
The middleweight champion received his long-awaited welcome home Thursday night at Alltel Arena, where he signed autographs and posed for pictures before being honored at an Arkansas RimRockers' game. Taylor, who is from Little Rock, defended his WBC and WBA championships Dec. 3 with a win over Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas.
The RimRockers held a midcourt ceremony at halftime of their 107-96 loss to the Tulsa 66ers. Taylor was greeted by a group that included Little Rock Mayor Jim Dailey, North Little Rock Mayor Patrick Hays and Rep. Stephen Bright of Maumelle.
Taylor initially won the middleweight title by beating Hopkins in July. After that fight, 5,500 flocked to a downtown parade and rally in Little Rock despite temperatures over 100.
This homecoming was a little different. Taylor signed autographs downstairs at a private reception, then moved up to the concourse level, where members of the public stood in line to meet him. The RimRockers drew a crowd of 4,571.
