UNION TOWNSHIP SUPERVISORS

Union Township supervisors took the following actions at their recent meeting:
Hired a second full-time police officer, promoting part-timer Mike Mrozek to full time to work the midnight shift. He has been on the police force for more than a year and will make $14.55 per hour. Several residents questioned where the money would come from to pay for a second full-timer. Supervisor Steve Galizia responded the money is in the 2006 budget, and there is no tax increase. The township's only other full-time officer is Chief Joe Lombardo. There are several part-time officers.
Adopted the property maintenance code, which replaces the township's dangerous buildings ordinance and gives the township a tool to use against dilapidated buildings and junk cars, supervisors said. The 2006 budget allocates money for a code enforcement officer who will be hired next year.
Made permanent a $10 per quarter increase in sewer bills to cover Union Township Sewer Authority costs. The New Castle Sanitation Authority also raised bills $7 additional dollars earlier this year. This increased township residents' minimum sewer bill from $53 to $70. The increase was adopted temporarily in April. Galizia said the reason for the increase is that the township sewer authority cannot break even with an increase less than $10.
Reported that Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has notified the township that the deck of the West Washington Street bridge over Pa. Route 60 will be repaired beginning in December 2006.
Accepted streets from the Medure Phase II Development on Winter Road.
Set the date for adopting the township budget for 7 p.m. next Thursday at the municipal building.
