BROOKFIELD -- Senior guard Terrance Philips led a balanced attack as Campbell Memorial High improved to 7-0 on the season with a 62-47 road victory over Brookfield Thursday night. Philips scored 25 points and added 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals. He scored 12 points in a 21-5 second-half run that took the Red Devils from a 19-12 deficit to a 33-24 halftime lead.
"We have to make sure we keep getting better at putting four good quarters together," Campbell coach Brian Danilov said. "And we continue to learn to get better through adversity, no matter where the adversity comes from."
The adversity
The adversity came from the Warriors early in the game Thursday as Brookfield led 16-12 after one quarter and increased it to 19-12 in the first minute of quarter number two.
The Red Devils steadily came back, taking a lead they never lost, 22-21, on a bucket by Trey Soares with 5:08 left in the second frame. Soares scored again just before the halftime buzzer to set the halftime score at 33-24, Campbell.
Soares finished with 10 points and six rebounds and Tommy Hall put together a 14-point, 10-rebound performance. The Devils also got seven points from Jermaine Richardson and six points from Ryan Burton.
Brookfield matched the Red Devils' uptempo game throughout and refused to go away in the second half, though the Warriors (2-2) were unable to get closer than seven points, the last time at 43-36 in the first minute of the fourth quarter. To Brookfield's credit, Campbell never was able to blow open the game. The 15-point final margin was the largest of the game.
Chris Bombeck led the Warriors with 16 points and Josh Harkulich added 11.
Not a factor
Danilov said the undefeated record is not a factor in the Red Devils' thinking.
"What we try to do is get the kids to realize that all the teams we play and their players are good," he said. "That sounds like coach talk, but all the teams practice hard and they have good kids and they play hard. Being undefeated is not as important for us as getting better.
"We've made good progress individually this season and we've also progressed as a team, but we are nowhere near where we need to get to compete at a high level."
Both teams shot the ball well, with Campbell making 25 of 53 attempts (47 percent) and Brookfield 19 of 44 (43 percent). Campbell had a distinct edge on the boards with a 32-17 rebounding advantage.
