Boardman handed first Federal defeat



The Spartans dropped a 62-54 contest at Canton McKinley.
CANTON -- The Boardman High girls basketball team had only three players reach the scoring column Thursday night, as the Spartans suffered their first Federal League defeat, 62-54, to Canton McKinley.
Courtney Schiffauer and April Melquist each scored 23 points for the Spartans (5-2, 2-1 Federal), while Colleen Mallis was the only other Spartan in the scoring column with eight points.
Boardman, which trailed 20-9 after the first quarter, rallied to pull within one point after three quarters 44-43, but the Canton McKinley (7-1, 3-0) scored the first six points of the final quarter and Boardman spent the rest of the time trying to catch up.
Porsche Poole led the Bulldogs with 21 points and Bianca Hooton added 17.
Liberty 44, Struthers 34
LIBERTY -- Freshman off bench Melissa Dykes came off the bench to score a season-high 12 points for Liberty (6-2).
Junior Ashley White added 11 points for the winners, who outscored Struthers in the first two quarters, 24-15.
Struthers' Ashley Galbraith had a team-high 16 points, including eight of 14 at the free-throw line. The Wildcats are 4-3.
Western Reserve 61, Leetonia 41
BERLIN CENTER -- Western Reserve's press caused numerous steals that helped the Blue Devils jump out to a 16-3 lead.
Junior forward Alex Rathburn had 19 points and eight rebounds, while junior guard Lainey Kekic added 17 points for Reserve (3-3), which made 26 goals to Leetonia's 17.
Erin Lamb's nine points paced Leetonia (0-6).
