Board of Health approves debris landfill expansion

BROOKFIELD -- The Trumbull County Board of Health has approved a license renewal for 2006, including authorization for more than a five-fold expansion, for the LaFarge construction and demolition debris landfill at 6205 Newton Falls-Bailey Road in Lordstown.
The company sought and received permission to add 120 acres to its current 26 acres of landfill if it decides to expand in the future, explained Tim Page, LaFarge's business unit manager at the landfill. The company owns 400 acres at the site, Page said.
Nobody spoke against the renewal or expansion at Wednesday's health board meeting in Brookfield.
The site has been in operation since the mid-1920s, at first accepting slag, and later railroad ties, bricks and iron that had outlived their usefulness, together with wood and iron from steel mills.
Today, the landfill accepts limestone, but not slag, mill or railroad debris, Page said.
The current landfill and expansion are limited to construction and demolition debris, and no garbage or hazardous waste is authorized to be accepted, Page said.
