Girl incurs suspension

She could also face expulsion and a felony charge.
NEW WILMINGTON -- A 13-year-old Wilmington Area Middle School pupil who reported a bomb threat because she didn't want to go to school faces a felony charge of threat to use weapons of mass destruction, police said.
Around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, the girl told a teacher and school secretary that she found a threatening hand-printed message in the girls' restroom. School officials responded to the report quickly and determined that the girl was responsible for the threat.
Officials' response
The school on Wood Street was not evacuated, but 13 buses were brought to the school if evacuation became necessary. As a precautionary measure, dogs trained to search for explosives were brought in and checked certain school locations and all building entrances.
With cooperation from the girl's parents, she provided a written statement admitting full responsibility for the threat and said she did it to avoid going to school, police said.
The teenager has been suspended from school for an initial period of 10 days and faces possible expulsion. Police Chief Carmen Piccirillo said in a news release that he hopes the strong response will discourage others from initiating similar bomb threats in schools.
Piccirillo said anyone convicted of threat to use weapons of mass destruction also is held responsible for full restitution of all emergency response and evacuation costs incurred.
