McDONALD -- Outgoing school board member William Kunkel urged fellow members to focus on "balance and objectivity."
Kunkle, who has served on the board since 1988 and decided not to seek re-election last month, said he felt fortunate to have served over the past 18 years, especially during the building project in the district.
He urged the board at its meeting Monday to consider what is important and what's positive. "Too many times we spend too much time on negative things," he said.
Superintendent Michael Wasser told Kunkle, "I appreciate everything you've done for the district, for myself and for the students." Catherine M. Harvey will replace Kunkel.

In other matters, the board accepted the resignation of English teacher Jerry Gamertsfelder, who will take advantage of the early retirement incentive program at the end of the school year.
Gamertsfelder, Kunkle said, will be "sorely missed" by the district.
Gamerstfelder not only taught English at the high school, but also directed several dramas with students and for 15 years organized a trip for students to New York City on Easter vacation. The itinerary always included a couple of Broadway plays and sightseeing in the city.
The board also approved holding regular meetings for 2006 on the third Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the high school library.
The board accepted a donation of $5,000 for a McDonald High School scholarship from the estate of former resident Ruby B. Manelly.
The board also received 24 new courtside chairs with a Blue Devil stitched on the back from The Gasser Chair Company through Mark E. Gasser, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Sheridan, the Firment Family, the Ronghi Family, and Bob and Diane Zajack.
Treasurer Thomas Radabaugh said no dollar value has been set on the chair donation.
