NHL ROUNDUP | MONDAY'S GAMES
Sabres 2, Flyers 1, SO
PHILADELPHIA -- Maxim Afinogenov scored for Buffalo in an extra shootout round, extending the Sabres' road winning streak to nine in a shootout victory over Philadelphia on Monday night. Afinogenov slipped one past Antero Niittymaki for the Sabres in the fourth round and Mike Knuble's chance to tie was off the mark, giving the Sabres their seventh straight overall win. Buffalo's nine straight road victories are only one shy of the NHL record, set by the Sabres in 1983-84, and matched by St. Louis in 2000 and New Jersey in 2001. And the Sabres did it this time without goalie Martin Biron, given the game off after winning 13 consecutive starts. Ryan Miller was strong in relief, finishing with 33 saves. Knuble scored for the Flyers on the same day he was picked for the U.S. Olympic hockey team.
Maple Leafs 9, Islanders 6
TORONTO -- Ed Belfour moved into sole possession of second place on the NHL's career wins list, and Matt Stajan scored twice in Toronto's win over the New York Islanders. Belfour lost five straight starts since moving into a tie with Terry Sawchuk on Nov. 28 for second place. But the 40-year-old goalie won his 448th -- despite allowing four goals in the first period and six goals on 33 shots. Fans chanted 'Ed-die, Ed-die' in the final minutes. Patrick Roy is the wins leader with 551. Alex Ponikarovsky, Ken Klee, Mariusz Czerkawski, Jeff O'Neill, Mats Sundin, Kyle Wellwood and Darcy Tucker also had goals for the Maple Leafs, who won for just the second time in six games. New York goalie Rick DiPietro, chosen earlier Monday for the U.S. Olympic hockey team, left after allowing six goals on 17 shots. Garth Snow didn't fare much better, allowing two of Toronto's four goals in the second period on just six shots.
Wild 2, Stars 1
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Marian Gaborik scored the winning goal midway through the third period and Minnesota rallied to slow down streaking Dallas. Gaborik took a long pass at center from Brian Rolston, a stride ahead Trevor Daley, and raced into the Stars zone. Gaborik faked right, went left and put a wrist shot over goalie Marty Turco at 11:58. The goal came less than four minutes after Todd White tied it for Minnesota. The Wild won for third time in four games. Randy Robitaille eluded a check from Stephane Robidas at the blue line, carried into the Dallas end and dropped a pass for White. His shot from low in the left circle beat Turco between the legs at 8:14. Jere Lehtinen scored for Dallas, which played the fifth of six straight road games. Dallas is 7-2 in its last nine games away from home. Overall, the Stars have won seven of nine and 12 of 15. Minnesota's Manny Fernandez, who entered the game with the NHL's second-best goals-against average (2.06) and save percentage (.930), stopped 30 shots for the win.
