Man accused of fleeing, assault must post full $413,500 bond
Peterson also has a record a criminal record in Florida.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Thomas L. Peterson, who police said avoided a traffic stop on the South Side by traveling through several jurisdictions, must post $413,500 bond to get out of the Mahoning County Jail.
Peterson, 41, gave an East Fourth Street, Salem, address when arraigned Monday in municipal court by Judge Elizabeth A. Kobly.
He faces four counts of felonious assault (four officers) and one count each of fleeing and eluding, possession of crack cocaine, resisting arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under suspension, failure to stop after an accident, failure to stop for traffic signals, unsafe vehicle, expired license plates, fictitious plates and no seat belt.
Criminal record
Dana C. Guarnieri, an assistant city prosecutor, told the judge that Peterson's record, in Ohio and Florida, includes breaking and entering, receiving stolen property, theft, resisting arrest, falsification, nonsupport and 14 driver's license forfeitures.
Peterson will be back in court next Tuesday for a preliminary hearing. His passenger was not charged. The judge said the sheriff is not to release Peterson unless the bond is posted.
The Sunday afternoon pursuit began on the South Side when an officer noticed that the plates on Peterson's van had expired. The pursuit went through Campbell, where Peterson tried to ram a cruiser head-on, Struthers, Poland Village, Poland, Boardman, Springfield and Beaver townships, reports show. It continued into Unity Township in Columbiana County.
The van Peterson was driving went through a yard in the 4900 block of Adams Road in East Palestine, and he and his passenger jumped out. Peterson, who got stuck on the driver's door, fell under the van as it continued to move, police said. The van ended up in a lake.
