Girl escapes fire in room
GIRARD -- A young girl escaped injury when she work up early Sunday and found her bed on fire at her home at 321 Iowa Ave. The fire, which firefighters think was caused when the cord of an electric space heater ignited, was reported at 6:39 a.m.
Firefighters said the girl, who is 9 or 10 years old, ran from her bedroom to the living room and told her father, Tom Oleski, about the fire. The family escaped unharmed.
Damage to the one-story ranch home is estimated at $15,000 to the structure and $10,000 to its contents. Fire damage was limited to the girl's bedroom, but there was smoke damage throughout the home. Smoke detectors were in the home, but they did not have batteries, firefighters said.
