Whooping-cough outbreak closes schools

OAKWOOD, Ohio (AP) -- The city's health commissioner has ordered schools to close early for the holiday break because of an outbreak of whooping cough that has sickened 11 pupils.
The break began at the end of classes Friday, and Oakwood pupils will not return until Jan. 3. All sporting events and extracurricular activities have been canceled until Dec. 26.
Eleven cases of whooping cough, or pertussis, have been confirmed in the pupils attending schools in this Dayton suburb since Nov. 29.
