Senior Astro Falcons capture tournament
The Youngstown team went 7-2 in the Florida event.
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Youngstown Senior Astro Falcons won the championship of the Roy Hobbs (48 and over) baseball world series recently at the Lee County Sports Complex, spring training home of the Minnesota Twins.
Astro Falcons, managed by Don Christian and assisted by Ron Langley and Lou Gagliano, finished the week-long tournament with a 7-2 record, winning the championship game, 11-7, over a squad from Chicago.
There were 54 teams from around the country in the tournament. Astro Falcons qualified for, then won the playoffs by winning four straight games.
Bill Sattler of Youngstown was named tournament MVP. He won five games, three with complete-game efforts and two by shutout) and batted .530 with a home run and seven doubles.
Jan Sulonen, former Champion High baseball coach, pitched two complete-game victories.
Hitters
Astro Falcons were led by the hitting of second baseman Terry Hogan of Boardman (.514), right-fielder Charlie White of Youngstown (.460), left-fielder John Cashbaugh of Youngstown (.457), first baseman-pitcher Ron Langley of Boardman (.412), shortstop Greg Rowland of Champion (.400), third baseman Dino Allen of Springfield (.366) and designated hitter John Peterka of Boardman (.320).
Tom Murphy of Youngstown led the defense and pitching staff by catching eight of the nine games and batting .412.
The remainder of the roster was: infielder Joe Bertilacci of Girard; center-fielder/pitcher Mike Damiano of Youngstown; outfielder Tom McCammon of Akron; pitcher-catcher Mike Popadak of Warren; infielder-designated hitter Paul Snatchko of Chester, W. Va.; pitcher-first baseman Ron Testa of Warren; and Christian (pitcher).
"Playing nine games in seven days is tough on young players, let alone us older guys," said Christian, who also serves as head of operations at Cene Park. "It took all 17 players to win, and it was truly a team effort."
