Navy
Navy Cmdr. Patrick Shea, a native of Youngstown, has been promoted to commanding officer of the destroyer USS Carney.
The change of command ceremony was Nov. 22 at the Naval Station, Mayport, Fla.
Shea, a 1983 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, graduated in 1987 from the Naval Academy. He received a bachelor's degree in 2000 from the University of Rhode Island and is a 2001 graduate of the Naval War College, completing master's degrees in business administration and national security affairs.
Shea's service at sea includes tours in destroyers and cruisers. His shore assignments include being an instructor in the Department Head Curriculum, Surface Warfare Officers School Command in Newport, R.I. He most recently was deputy executive assistant to the deputy chief of naval operations for resources, requirements and assessments.
His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendations Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and various unit and campaign awards.
Shea is a son of Sally L. Shea of Virginia Beach, Va., formerly of Detroit Avenue in Youngstown, and the late Paul E. Shea. He and his wife, Carole, have two sons, Timothy and Owen, and live in Mayport.
RETIREMENT
Air National Guard
Air National Guard Senior Master Sgt. Cecelia J. Swartzmiller has retired from the Air National Guard, a reserve component of the Air Force, after 20 years' service.
At the retirement ceremony, she received her second Meritorious Service Medal, which is awarded to members of the armed forces who distinguish themselves by outstanding achievement or meritorious service in noncombat situations.
Before retiring, Swartzmiller served as a personnel superintendent with the 178th Mission Support Flight, Springfield, Ohio.
Her information management career began in 1985, when she entered the Air Force. For the next 10 years, she was on active duty status with assignments to Osan Air Base, South Korea; Ramstein Air Base, Germany; and Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi.
In 1995, she separated from active duty and joined the Air Force Reserves in San Antonio. In August 1996, she enlisted in the New Mexico Air National Guard, where was the 150th Operations Group information manager. In 2000, she enlisted with the Arkansas Air National Guard when her husband was transferred to Little Rock Air Force Base.
During her career, she was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal, Outstanding Unit Award, Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
She is the daughter of Raymond P. Hesapene of Kekaha, Hawaii. Her husband, Justin, is the son of Jerry and Marcia Swartzmiller of Wellsville.
She graduated in 1984 from Waimea High School, Hawaii, and received a bachelor's degree this year from Franklin University, Columbus.
DEPLOYED
Army
Army Pfc. Daniel Jones has been deployed as part of an advance group to Kuwait before his unit is shipped to Iraq. Jones, a 2001 graduate of Springfield Local High School, is a munitions specialist and gunner stationed at Fort Carson, Colo. He is a son of Roy and Rebecca Jones of New Springfield.

Marines
Marine Corps Pvt. Jamie DiMuzio, who graduated from basic training in October, is attending technical school, and will be stationed at Corpus Christi, Texas. DiMuzio, at 2005 graduate of St. Joseph High School in Trumbull, Conn., is the daughter of James V. and Cyndee M. DiMuzio of Austintown.
