Lucky Penny to performon Christmas Day show
YOUNGSTOWN -- Lucky Penny, Youngstown's hometown hip-hop artist, will perform Christmas Day on "Community Relations with Madonna Chism" at 6:30 a.m. on WFMJ-TV, channel 21.
He will be interviewed on his upcoming project as well as his success in the music business.
Lucky Penny has always been known for his positive outlook on life and music. In 2003, he released his first independent album, entitled "On My Own," which received local attention for his tribute to Youngstown, "City I Love."
This past summer he released a five-song EP that featured his summer hit "Pick It Up."
Also during the summer, Lucky Penny attended several music industry conferences, where he was a standout act. He received a standing ovation from the panelists as well as the audience at the Florida Music Festival's Trash 'N Bash competition for his song "Died A Hero," a song honoring all of the fallen soldiers. He was also a feature artist on XM satellite radio's unsigned channel.
Rehearsals beginfor 'Charlie Brown'
LISBON -- Casting is complete and rehearsals are under way for Stage Left Youth Players' next production, "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown," a musical by Clark M. Gesner based on the "Peanuts" comic strip, by Charles M. Schulz.
The show will perform two weekends -- Jan. 13-14, and Jan. 20-22 -- at the Outreach Center in Lisbon. Showtimes are 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sunday. For tickets, call (330) 424-5093.
Nathan Kuhns of Lisbon plays the luckless Charlie Brown, with Carly Ellis of Salem goading him on as Lucy. Tyler Hane of Girard will play her baby brother, Linus, with blanket in hand, while Chelsea Farthing of Alliance looks on as the adoring Sally. Reed Worth of Elkton will play Schroeder, and Daniel Huston of Salem will rule the Peanuts Gang from atop his doghouse as Snoopy, with Lisbon's Kasey Sanor as Woodstock perched nearby. Boardman's Jaki Whitmore as Peppermint Patti will coach the rest of the Peanuts Gang to victory on the baseball field. Rounding out the team are Sarah James, Ryan Sowards, Courtney Stewart, Jessica Hall, Mike and Jordan Spencer of Lisbon; Aimee Williamson, Andrew Halley, and Kedron Taylor of Canfield; Kacie Honeywell and Doug Mondell of Salem; Jacob Ward of Kensington; and Brittany Pahanish of Leetonia.
Winterrific fun
CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and Cleveland Metroparks Brookside Reservation have teamed up for a new event called Winterrific. Taking advantage of their proximity to each other, the zoo and park district are creating a 300-acre winter playground from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 21 and 22 with winter recreation activities and half-price admission to the zoo. The zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to5 p.m.
At both Winterrific locations, visitors will enjoy an avalanche of winter recreation fun, plus ice carvings, winter hikes, high-tech "treasure" hunts, also known as geocaching, crafts for kids and more.
Some Winterrific activities are specific to each area. At Brookside Reservation, enjoy dog sled demonstrations and rides; an ice rink with skating performances, or bring your own skates to take a glide around; and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing demonstrations. At Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, enjoy Meet-the-Keeper opportunities with polar bears, reindeer and wolves; animal enrichment demonstrations and guided winter horticultural hikes.
Getting back and forth between "Winterrific" activities at Brookside Reservation and the zoo will be convenient. A tractor-drawn wagon ride, a horse-drawn wagon ride and a shuttle bus will make regular trips.
During Winterrific, admission to the zoo and the RainForest is $3 for adults and $2 for kids. Children under 2 are always free. Admission is free at Brookside Reservation, although some activities have a nominal fee.
Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is located at 3900 Wildlife Way, between East 25th Street and Fulton Parkway in Cleveland. The entrance to Brookside Reservation is located off Ridge Road, north of Memphis Avenue and the I-480/Ridge Road exit in Cleveland. Parking is free.
Polar Bear Days
CLEVELAND -- Use January's cold to warm your pockets with savings during Polar Bear Days at Cleveland MetroParks Zoo.
Whenever the temperature in January falls below 32 degrees, the zoo will declare a Polar Bear Day. That means zoo visitors receive half-price admission on that day: $3 for adults and $2 for kids ages 2-11. Kids under 2 are always free. The zoo is closed Jan. 1.
Cleveland MetroParks Zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
