People chip in to replace stolen gifts

URBANCREST, Ohio (AP) -- People who heard that 450 toys for needy children were stolen from a Salvation Army storage facility brought about 1,000 replacement gifts to the organization the next day.
Salvation Army officials discovered the theft Thursday at the facility in Urbancrest, about eight miles south of Columbus.
The donated toys were for Christmas Cheer, a program that provides 6,500 needy families with gifts and groceries. The toys that were taken were worth about $6,000, said Franklin County sheriff's officials who are investigating.
Local press reported about the theft Friday and a Columbus radio station asked residents to drop off toys at three centers in the city. The result was overwhelming, said Oather Talley, a spokesman for the organization.
"It's been so heartwarming that in the face of what looked like a terrible event that the outcome has been absolutely tremendous," he said. "We just kept seeing truckloads of people [with donations] coming in."
