NAIA CHAMPIONSHIP Title game rematch is battle of unbeatens
St. Francis (Ind.) and Carroll (Mont.) both played in the title game last year.
SAVANNAH, Tenn. (AP) -- Same game, same place, a year later.
The NAIA national title game today matches unbeaten Carroll College (Mont.) against unbeaten St. Francis (Ind.), the teams that met for last year's championship won by Carroll on a field goal with 10 seconds left.
"You have the two best teams back in the same place a year later," St. Francis coach Kevin Donley said. "I'm sure they're a better team; I know we are."
In the '04 title game at Jim Carroll Stadium, Marcus Miller kicked a 24-yard field goal for a 15-13 win and Carroll's third straight national crown.
Carroll (13-0), following a 55-0 rout of Sioux Falls in the semifinals, has a 20-game winning streak. The loss in the title game was St. Francis' lone defeat in its last 26 outings. St. Francis beat Morningside (Iowa) 41-24 in the other semifinal.
Similar teams
Their records are the same and their stats are similar: Carroll averages 40 points and allows an NAIA best 9.4; St. Francis averages about 40 points and allows nearly 11.
The game also will feature the last two NAIA players of the year -- Carroll's Little All-America quarterback Tyler Emmert and last year's winner, St. Francis running back Cory Jacquay.
Emmert has the NAIA record for total offense (13,681), including 4,228 this season. He's passed for 3,039 yards and 32 touchdowns -- half of them to Tyler Peterson -- and has rushed for 1,189 yards and five more scores.
"I came to college with high expectations," said Emmert, who has completed more than 70 percent of his career passes and is 50-3 as the Saints' starter.
Saints' coach Mike Van Diest said, "Tyler has to have a great game for us to win, but we have to run better than we did against St. Francis last year to keep the pressure off him."
