Kershaw lifts Liberty to win



Even with 27 points from Andrew Bobalik, East Liverpool lost to Poland.
LIBERTY -- Liberty senior Edward Kershaw scored a game-high 26 points for the Liberty High boys basketball team, which took a 25-10 first quarter lead en route to a 69-57 win over Chaney on Friday.
Kershaw also had 10 rebounds and five steals, while junior Mychal Doblanksi had 17 points, six assists and three steals for Liberty (2-1). Lonnie Showers had 13 rebounds for the Leopards, which won the board battle 38-31.
Antonio Fitzgerald had 24 points, and Dominique Peake had eight rebounds for Chaney (0-5), which never got closer than eight points over the final three quarters.
Niles 68, Hubbard 52
NILES -- The Red Dragons (3-2) put the non-league contest away with a 21-14 surge in the fourth quarter.
Bill Frech paced Niles with 21 points, and Sean Cleary added 18.
Frank Rosile led the Eagles with 18 points, and Sal DeJulio finished with 12.
Mass. Perry 52, Boardman 43
BOARDMAN -- Kenny Frease scored 13 of his 17 points after the break to lead the Panthers (4-0, 1-0 Federal League).
Jon Kocon collected 12 points and six assists for the Spartans (3-2, 0-1), who were tied at 37 entering the final quarter.
Andrew Chifolo had 10 points -- all in the first half -- while Ed Deluca had four rebounds for Boardman.
Poland 65, East Liverpool 49
POLAND -- Andrew Bobalik had a game-high 27 points for East Liverpool, which was within 27-25 at halftime, but the Potters scored only six points in the third quarter as Poland prevailed.
Poland piled up 20 points in the third quarter, and the Bulldogs (2-2) finished the game 21 of 36 from the field. Junior guard Chris Lovell and 6-8 junior center Louis Coppola had 18 points apiece.
Poland had a 30-29 edge in rebounds with Coppola grabbing seven and Daniel Bennett six. Sophomore point guard Anthony DeFelice had nine assists.
Struthers 87, Mathews 41
STRUTHERS -- The Wildcats rolled to a 40-25 lead by intermission, then cruised to the victory and will play Wilson for the Struthers Wildcat Holiday Classic championship tonight at 7:30.
Eleven players got into the scoring column for Struthers with Mike Duponty's 26 points triggering the attack. Matt Kukura added 13 points, and R.J. Ragan had 11.
Tarin Brown sparked the Mustangs with 15 points.
Lutheran East 60,Youngstown Christian 32
YOUNGSTOWN -- John Liggins scored 21 points, and Quintas Teer supported the attack with 12 points for the Falcons (4-0).
David Culvert paced the Eagles (1-3) with seven points.
The Falcons used a 14-point second quarter to seize a 36-14 lead at the break.
