HOWLAND -- Howland's Dario Hadzovic had one of those nights that you dream of with 38 points, but the Campbell High boys basketball team won the battle that mattered -- on the scoreboard -- as the undefeated Red Devils won their fifth straight, 63-53, on Friday.
Hadzovic, a 6-7 senior, connected on 17 of 26 shots from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers, and added two foul shots for his 38 points. He also had 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.
"We got [Hadzovic] into college tonight." said Campbell coach Brian Danilov. "All they have to do is send in this highlight film and he should be in."
Top Tigers
Hadzovic was the only Howland (0-3) player in double figures. Jared Bartholomew added nine points on three long-range shots. The rest of the Tigers managed just six points.
For Campbell, Terrance Phillips scored 22, including 11 in the fourth quarter. Jermaine Richardson added 13 points and Trey Soares had 11 to give Campbell three players in double figures. Tommy Hall had eight points and seven blocks, while Ryan Burton added seven markers for Campbell.
Campbell scored the first nine points of the game before Hadzovic scored with nearly four minutes gone. Campbell led 16-14 at end of the first quarter and Hadzovic had all 14. He missed his first two shots of the first half and made his final nine, finishing with 18 at halftime.
Howland tied the game twice in the second quarter before the Red Devils moved back out to a 30-25 lead at half.
"What I like about our team is that we are very unselfish," Danilov said. "We've just got to learn to put four quarters together and to stay mentally focused for a much longer period of time."
Third quarter
Richardson scored seven points in the third quarter and Burton added five for Campbell while Hadzovic had seven for Howland. Campbell took a 48-39 lead going into the final eight minutes.
The Red Devils maintained their lead down the stretch as Phillips connected on seven free throws in the last quarter.
"It is good to have a couple of kids that can make foul shots down the stretch," Danilov said. "Terrance [Phillips] was one of our best foul shooters last year. Our guards shoot pretty good at the foul line."
Both teams had 17 turnovers while Howland won the rebounding battle 35-28. Campbell connected on 24 of 49 shots from the floor to 23 of 57 for Howland. The difference was the foul line where the Red Devils made 11 to just two for the Tigers.
Point in training
"Jermaine [Richardson] is coming along at the point for us, as he had to replace a senior [Louie Samonas] from last year," Danilov said. "He is starting to pick the point up, as is Ryan Burton and Phillips.
"Tommy Hall and Trey Soares have been working hard [since] the summer and it is starting to pay off."
Richardson had five assists and Soares three.
