"For Browns Fans Only" by Rich Wolfe (Lone Wolfe Press, 264 pp. $24.95 hardcover)
Vindicator staff report
Rich Wolfe is so sure Browns fans are going to like his latest book, he's giving it away for free.
Readers can view all 264 pages of Wolfe's latest book, "For Browns Fans Only," on the United Way of Greater Cleveland's web site, www.uws.org.
The book also is available for purchase on the site at a discounted rate, with $6 from each book going to charity.
"I figure it's win-win for everybody," said Wolfe, a Notre Dame graduate who lives in Arizona. "It's great for the United Way, it's great for the people who can't afford the book and it's great for the people who can buy the book, but didn't know it existed."
Fans recalling memories
The book is a compilation of interviews from fans recalling their favorite memories from following the Browns through the years. He's had success with this format before, writing books such as "For Packers Fans Only," "For Red Sox Fans Only" and "For Yankees Fans Only."
"I can do any team I want but anyone who's a serious football fan knows that there are three NFL teams with really passionate fans: the Browns, the Steelers and the Packers," said Wolfe, who plans to eventually write a Steelers book. "Those are the ones that really stand out."
The book is available in major bookstores such as Barnes & amp; Noble and Borders for $24.95, but it's also available in several discount stores and grocery stores around northeast Ohio such as Costco and Heinens.
He often does book signings in such places in order to reach people who don't normally buy books.
Tough place to sell
"It didn't take me long to realize that a bookstore is the worst place to sell a book," he said. "There are thousands of books there, which means the odds are 100,000-to-1 that someone's going to walk out of there with my book.
"Those aren't good odds to overcome. I'm not that good of a writer."
Wolfe does all of the interviewing, writing and proofreading himself. While there's plenty of content, he makes sure it's easy read.
"We've got crazy stories, off-the-wall trivia facts, full-page color pictures and funny headlines," he said. "A lot of people buy it for their husbands or fathers who are Browns fans.
"And a lot of guys read it in the bathroom. That's why the chapters are so short."
