COLUMBUS -- Twenty-two Democrats in the state Legislature endorsed state Sen. Marc Dann on Wednesday for attorney general as the best choice for the office.
Dann of Liberty, and Subodh Chandra, the former law director for the city of Cleveland, are vying for the Democratic Party nomination next year for attorney general, the state's chief legal officer.
Chandra couldn't immediately be reached to comment.
Republican state Sen. Timothy Grendell of Chesterland, east of Cleveland, is the only announced GOP attorney general candidate so far.
Current attorney general Jim Petro, a Republican, is seeking the GOP nomination for governor next year.
Eight of the Senate's 11 Democrats as well as 14 of the House's 39 Democrats have thrown their support to Dann. Republicans are in the majority in both houses of the Legislature.
"He's really developed the respect of his colleagues," Senate Minority Leader C.J. Prentiss of Cleveland said of Dann. "This is a guy we want to be the top cop."
"You're looking at a man who does his homework," said state Rep. Kenneth Carano of Austintown, D-59th.
Other Democratic lawmakers supporting Dann for attorney general include state Sen. Robert Hagan of Youngstown, D-33rd; state Rep. Sandra Stabile Harwood of Niles, D-65; and state Rep. Sylvester D. Patton Jr. of Youngstown, D-60th.
Dann has been one of the loudest critics of investment losses at the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation, the state insurance fund for injured workers.
