County to add patrols
YOUNGSTOWN -- Most police departments in Mahoning County will add extra patrols to catch drunken or drugged drivers today and Saturday.
Officers also will be issuing citations for seat-belt violations.
The extra patrols are made possible with a grant of federal and state funds that is administered through the Goshen Township Police.
Participating police departments are members of the Mahoning County Operating a Vehicle Impaired Task Force.
Gas station robbed
BOARDMAN -- An employee at an East Midlothian Boulevard gas station reported the station was robbed of about $350.
The clerk told police that a man came into the Speedway earlier this week and placed a note on the counter demanding the money from the cash registers and threatening to kill her if she didn't comply.
He handed her a brown lunch bag and threatened her again, pointing at with what she believes was a gun in his coat pocket.
The employee put money into the bag and the man took it and fled on foot, disappearing between buildings on Midlothian, witnesses said.
Funds awaited for dock
WELLSVILLE -- The Columbiana County Port Authority is waiting for $4.1 million that will be used to complete its new dock facility on the Ohio River.
Tracy Drake, the authority's chief executive officer, said Thursday that the port may get the funds promised by federal officials by the end of the year.
The authority this week got another $1 million that it awarded to Brayman Construction Co. Slightly more than half will go to improve mooring. Another $390,400 will be used to build a pier.
The $4.1 million will help finance construction of a crane. When completed, the dock facility will be able to easily move cargo between barges, trucks and railroad cars.
Guilty plea in stabbing
YOUNGSTOWN -- Andre Scott, 25, of Dogwood Drive faces up to 18 months in prison for stabbing his ex-girlfriend earlier this year. Scott previously pleaded innocent to felonious assault, but on Wednesday before Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge R. Scott Krichbaum, he pleaded guilty to an amended charge of aggravated assault, a fourth-degree felony. Scott, who will be sentenced later, also could receive a $5,000 fine.
Employees provide gifts
YOUNGSTOWN -- Employees of Home Savings & amp; Loan, For Us All Ministries in Poland, and Youngstown State University, through its Office of Student Life, and the Wal-Mart Foundation, through its Boardman store, provided gifts for children and adults served by the Greater Youngstown Point day drop-in shelter for the homeless.
The gifts included clothing, such as hats, scarves, gloves and toys, for some 80 children and 10 adults served by Greater Youngstown Point, 322 Wick Ave.
Ministry to give gifts
YOUNGSTOWN -- Children 10 years and younger who attend the Super Kids program at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Heart Reach Ministries, 211 Redondo Road, will receive a Christmas gift.
Christmas dinner set
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Community Food Center Inc. and Gleaners Food Bank will host Christmas dinner from noon to 1 p.m. Christmas Day at St. Patrick's Church Hall on Oak Hill Ave. The group also will provide fruit baskets for attendees and toys for the children. Registration forms for toy recipients can be picked up at the food bank, 94 Pyatt St., and must be returned by Monday.
Mission needs toys
WARREN -- The Warren Family Mission, 361 Elm Road, N.E., is asking the public to donate more toys so it can fulfill the needs of 314 families with more than 800 children, who have signed up for Wednesday's free toy distribution at the mission.
The mission says it has enough toys for one-quarter of the children whose families signed up for the distribution. Donors are asked to drop off toys for children ranging from newborns to age 16 at the mission between now and Wednesday.
