Accused employee loses job
Necklaces and bracelets were taken, the homeowner told police.
STRUTHERS -- A Mahoning County sanitary engineer employee who was charged with burglary -- while working -- has been fired.
Carmine J. Ramunno, 23, of Edison Street, will be back in municipal court at 10 a.m. Wedneday for a preliminary hearing with Judge James Lanzo. Bond was set at $20,000.
Sanitary Engineer Joseph Warino was not available Thursday, his office said.
Office manager Bill Coleman said James Petraglia, county director of human resources, notified Ramunno of the termination by letter that went out Tuesday. Coleman declined to comment on the burglary charge but said Ramunno was working at the time the crime took place.
Coleman said Ramunno had been a technician working on a database system. His work entailed recording the location of all manholes with a Global Positioning System.
Ramunno was hired full time Aug. 29. He worked as an intern before that while attending Youngstown State University, Coleman said.
What police found
Ramunno was arrested Monday on a warrant. He was initially apprehended by Boardman police then transferred to Struthers, where he was held in jail pending arraignment.
Police who responded to a burglary call Dec. 8 at an Overlook Boulevard residence discovered a door window broken out, which allowed the suspect to reach in and unlock the door.
The homeowner, who said that the break-in took place that morning, told police that jewelry -- two necklaces and two bracelets -- were missing from the master bedroom on the first floor.
Police found footprints on the roof that goes between the garage and the house. A ladder in the garage was in an area that would have allowed someone to climb to the roof near an upstairs bedroom, but no entry was made.
