Man shot in car dies
YOUNGSTOWN -- Terry Briskey, who was shot in the head early Tuesday afternoon as he was driving west on West Glenaven Avenue, died at noon Wednesday in St. Elizabeth Health Center.
After Briskey, 19, was shot about 12:30 p.m., his car smashed into the porch and steps of a house at 154 West Glenaven.
Witnesses heard several shots, and police found several bullet casings at the scene. Briskey had no weapon in the car, police said. He stayed with relatives on the city's South Side.
Man dies in car crash
WARREN -- A 26-year-old city man was killed in an accident in which he was trapped under a vehicle that rolled over in the 200 block of Tod Avenue Northwest. Antonio Bell of Oregon Avenue Northwest died in the crash that happened at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said.
Rapist gets 24 years
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kenyon B. McLaughlin of North Raccoon Road, Austintown, received 24 years in prison for raping a young female relative who was under 13. McLaughlin appeared Wednesday before Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, who sentenced him to four-year terms on each of six counts. Assistant County Prosecutor Dawn Krueger said the rapes occurred over a four-year period.

WARREN -- Tim Gibson has won the second seat on the LaBrae Board of Education by two votes over Roger L. Cope.
Trumbull County Board of Elections had automatic recounts Wednesday for that race and two others. The results showed no changes.
Also recounted was the Maplewood school board race, which gave the third seat to David M. Drawl by nine votes over Justin D. Pykare. The recount also finalized results of the Kinsman Township Sunday liquor option, which was tied 95-95, meaning it was defeated.
Cleaning water system
WARREN -- Robert Davis, the city's utility services director, said the new secondary disinfection process for the city water supply system, known as chloramination, which uses both ammonia and chlorine, began operation at noon Wednesday. Davis said it would take two to three days for the process to become fully effective throughout the system.
Phony phone ruse
AUSTINTOWN -- A township woman told police that a man pretending to be from the Internal Revenue Service was able to obtain her bank account number over the phone.
The 24-year-old Raccoon Road woman said the man told her Monday he had a check for her that was unable to be delivered, and asked for her account number so he could deposit it, a police report said.
The woman said she hesitated, but when he proved he had her Social Security number and birthdate, she gave him the account number, the report said.
She was referred to a computerized verification number, but it turned out to be a bad number, the woman told police.
Break-in at apartments
YOUNGSTOWN -- At least one person broke into the vacant apartments above Connect Clothing and Accessories, 2600 Market St., and used a hammer and crowbar to make a hole in the floor Tuesday night, police report. The thief or thieves stole a large amount of clothing and coats of an undetermined value, the report shows. Police found the hammer and crowbar in a vacant apartment.
Man faces weapon count
YOUNGSTOWN -- Municipal Judge Robert P. Milich set bond at $25,000 for 22-year-old Robert Lundy, who is charged with carrying a concealed weapon and illegal possession of a weapon.
Police arrested Lundy, who listed addresses on Wabash Avenue and Breaden Street, during a traffic stop Tuesday on Overland Avenue, when they say they found a partially loaded .38-caliber revolver in the back seat of the car, next to where Lundy was sitting. Police said they found an envelope with four more live rounds in Lundy's pocket.
Motel robbed of $55
CANFIELD -- Police said an employee of El Patio Motel on Main Street was robbed at gunpoint at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. The employee told police the robber took $55 from the cash drawer. Seventy dollars the robber dropped while fleeing was recovered, police said.
