Mass. governor to skip2006 re-election bid
BOSTON -- Republican Gov. Mitt Romney said Wednesday that he will not run for a second term next year, fueling speculation he will seek the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. "My decision comes down to this: In this four-year term, we can accomplish what I set out to do. In fact, we've already accomplished a great deal," he said. The 58-year-old businessman, son of former Michigan Gov. George Romney, has spent less than three years in elective office, but in that time the state has closed a $3 billion budget deficit without raising taxes, schools have scored first in national math and science tests and Romney held out until the Legislature gave him a tough new drunken driving law he demanded.
Ford returns to workafter stay in hospital
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- Former President Ford spent several hours at his office Wednesday, a day after returning from a brief hospital stay for routine medical tests. Ford, 92, was admitted Monday to Eisenhower Medical Center for what his office described as a regularly scheduled health exam. Ford had been fighting a stubborn cold at the time, but he's feeling better, said his chief of staff, Penny Circle. He returned Tuesday to his Rancho Mirage home in the Southern California desert. "He is at the office, doing all his normal things," Circle said.
Israel kills four militantsin airstrike in Gaza Strip
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- Israeli missiles fired from the air ripped apart two cars in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, killing four Palestinian militants and wounding five other people, including an Islamic Jihad spokesman, the military and Palestinians said. The strikes came as the Palestinians' ruling Fatah Party slipped into disarray. Young activists split away and formed their own party for Jan. 25 parliamentary elections, rejecting attempts by old-timers to keep control of the party that has ruled Palestinian politics for decades. The airstrikes in eastern Gaza City were Israel's third and fourth since it renewed the practice of targeting militants following a deadly suicide bombing in Israel on Dec. 5. Altogether, seven militants have been killed.
Car theft suspects leavean easy trail to follow
REDLANDS, Calif. -- Police in California say they had a lot of help nabbing a pair of car theft suspects -- from the suspects themselves. The men left behind not only fingerprints, but also photos of themselves sitting inside and standing outside the stolen 2001 Ford Mustang, police said. The photos were taken with a disposable camera the suspects found in the Mustang, which they left behind when they abandoned the car. "These are not the brightest people," said Carl Baker, a Redlands police department spokesman. The fingerprints and photos led police to the Redlands home of Albert Engelsman last week. Police say he was wearing the same shirt he had on in the photographs. "Once he was confronted with this evidence, he pretty much realized he was done in," Baker said. Engelsman, 28, was charged with grand theft auto and possession of stolen property, Baker said. He is free on bail. An arrest warrant on the same charges has been issued for the man accused of being his accomplice, Matthew Montanez, 22, of Rialto, Baker said.
