Woman killed by pickup
BRISTOLVILLE -- Viola Ball, 85, of Bristolville, was walking south on North Park Avenue Extension, just south of state Route 88 in Bristol Township at 3:30 p.m., when she was struck and killed by a southbound vehicle.
Ball was pronounced dead at the scene, an Ohio State Highway Patrol statement said.
The vehicle, a 2000 Ford Ranger, was driven by Andrew Martin, 16, of Bristolville. Neither Martin nor a passenger in his vehicle, 15-year-old Jonathan Elwood, also of Bristolville, was injured.
The crash is under investigation by the state highway patrol, which reported the road was dry. The state highway patrol, Bristol Fire Department and an investigator from the Trumbull County coroner's office were at the scene.
Couple wins lottery
WARREN -- A Warren couple has won $110,000 in the Ohio Lottery's Rolling Cash 5 game. Ted and Sarah Paxson won the jackpot during the Dec. 10 drawing. After taxes, they will receive $78,650. They used auto lotto in purchasing the ticket at Newton Falls IGA Foodline, which will receive a $500 bonus.
Fire cause in dispute
YOUNGSTOWN -- The renter of an apartment at 2639 Tyrell Ave. told firefighters that a fire started from candles on top of a large-screen TV, reports show. Other occupants of the building told firefighters that the woman said her boyfriend started the fire, and the manager said the woman had a restraining order against the boyfriend. The fire Monday did about $14,000 damage. The cause remains under investigation.
Intentional fires
YOUNGSTOWN -- An intentional fire at a vacant house at 117 Benita Ave. started in a bedroom around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, the fire department said. Flames filled the second and third floors when crews arrived, and stairs to the second floor were missing. A demolition order was submitted for site cleanup. Damage was estimated at $10,000. Another vacant house at 506 W. Evergreen Ave. was intentionally burned Monday afternoon, likely with an accelerant on the front porch, the fire department said. Damage was set at $16,000. A neighbor said it had been used as a crack house. Demolition was recommended.
Shop With a Cop set
LORDSTOWN -- Ten children in need will be treated to dinner and a free shopping spree Thursday in the village's Shop With a Cop Program. Donations were made to the police department by residents and village businesses through fund-raising events and a grant from Sam's Club. High school students raised $389, and Sam's provided $525. The children will have dinner at Chuck E Cheese's and shop at Kmart.
Black Knights giveaway
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Black Knights Police Association and the East Side Crime Watch will give away toys, coats, sweaters and other clothes Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Crime Watch station at the corner of Oak and Fruit streets. Drug house closed
AUSTINTOWN -- Township police evicted a homeowner and boarded up his home because of nuisance drug activity, according to a police report. A township officer, members of the Mahoning Valley Drug Task Force, members of the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team, a senior deputy attorney general and an assistant Mahoning County prosecutor served a court order to Glenn T. Hetherington, 3852 Ayrshire Drive, after getting no response at the door and then forcing their way into the home Friday at noon, the report said.
They found Hetherington lying on the floor, and he was served the order, the report said. They also found evidence of drug use in the home and confiscated it, the report said.
After Hetherington gathered his belongings and left, the windows and doors were boarded up, the report said.
