Villanova turns back Penn for 7th victory

PHILADELPHIA -- Allan Ray scored 19 points and No. 3 Villanova withstood a 24-7 run late in the second half to beat pesky Penn 62-55 Tuesday night at the Palestra.
Randy Foye scored 16 points for the Wildcats (7-0), off to their best start since 1995-96.
The Quakers (3-4) trailed by 21 points early in the second half. Ibrahim Jaaber hit a 3 that made it 55-40 with 6:40 left. The Quakers had missed all 18 3-point attempts until Jaaber, who scored 14 points, hit one from the right side.
Villanova was called for a technical for having too many players on the court and Jaaber made both free throws to make it 57-53 and cap the run.
No. 4 Louisville 78, Chicago St. 54
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Taquan Dean scored 21 points and Louisville overcame a lethargic first half to pull away for the win at Freedom Hall.
David Padgett added 12 points and eight rebounds for Louisville (6-0).
David Holston scored 17 points for the Cougars (1-6), who were playing their seventh straight road game to start the season.
Women
WACO, Texas -- Abiola Wabara scored 15 points and Jessica Morrow added 14 to lead No. 5 Baylor to a 72-36 victory over McNeese State as the defending national champions extended their winning streak to 28 games.
Sophia Young added 13 points and Jordan Davis had 10 for the Lady Bears (8-0).
Baylor played without Angela Tisdale, who was suspended for three games for an unspecified violation of team rules. She averaged 15.7 points and 7.3 assists per game over the first seven games.
Regina Spivey paced McNeese State (3-5) with 11 points.
No. 8 Maryland 69, Coppin St. 38
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Marissa Coleman scored 13 points and Laura Harper and Shay Doron each had 12 for Maryland.
The Terrapins (9-1) outscored their in-state foes 23-4 at the free throw line and finished with a 40-19 rebounding advantage. Maryland is 11-0 against Coppin State in the one-sided rivalry that began in 1991.
Rashida Suber scored 16 points and Sherrie Tucker had 10 for the Eagles (1-4), off to their worst start in seven seasons under coach Derek Brown.
South Carolina 79, No. 14 Minnesota 61
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Junior Shannel Harris matched her season total of 13 points and South Carolina ended a 17-game losing streak against ranked teams.
The Gamecocks (3-3) hadn't beaten a Top 25 team since defeating No. 13 Arkansas 83-59 on Feb. 16, 2003.
The Golden Gophers (6-2) hit just two of their first 18 shots and South Carolina was ahead 13-2 less than 6 minutes into the game.
Liz Podominick led Minnesota with a career-high 21 points.
