Fresh off picking up a slew of critics' honors, "Brokeback Mountain" is now also the leading nominee for the Golden Globe Awards.
Additionally, all four "Desperate Housewives" earned nominations as the ABC hit led the television categories with five nods. And it was a good morning for "Housewives" star Felicity Huffman, also nominated for her work in the movie "Transamerica," and George Clooney, who earned nominations for acting ("Syriana") and directing and co-writing best movie drama nominee "Good Night, and Good Luck."
"Brokeback Mountain," which chronicles the tragic romance between two cowboys (Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal), picked up seven nominations, including best picture/drama, best actor for Ledger, best director (Ang Lee), best supporting actress (Michelle Williams) and best screenplay (Larry McMurtry and Diana Osana). The film's score and the song "A Love that Never Grows Old" also earned nominations.
Two of its competitors in the best picture/drama category, "Good Night, and Good Luck" and Woody Allen's "Match Point," earned four nominations apiece. The other best movie drama nominees are "The Constant Gardener" and "A History of Violence."
Other categories
"The Producers" heads the list of nominees for best movie/musical or comedy; it received four nominations, including acting nods for Nathan Lane and Will Ferrell. The other best comedy nominees are "Mrs. Henderson Presents," "Pride and Prejudice," "The Squid and the Whale" and "Walk the Line."
On the TV side, Eva Longoria, who was snubbed in last year's nominations, joins her fellow "Housewives" Huffman, Marcia Cross and Teri Hatcher as nominees for best actress in a comedy series. Mary-Louise Parker, who plays a different kind of suburban mom in Showtime's "Weeds," is the fifth nominee in the category.
"Housewives" is joined in the best comedy series category by two HBO shows, "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Entourage," and three newcomers -- "Weeds," NBC's "My Name Is Earl" and UPN's "Everybody Hates Chris."
In the drama series category, three ABC shows -- "Lost," "Grey's Anatomy" and "Commander in Chief"-- will compete against FOX's "Prison Break" and HBO's "Rome."
The 63rd annual Golden Globes will air Jan. 16 on NBC.
