Teen charged in assault
BOARDMAN -- A Cardinal Mooney High School student faces a felonious assault charge after he punched a Poland High School student Saturday, police reports show.
Police arrested Kenneth Cole, 18, of Dorado Beach Drive, Canfield. He's accused of assaulting Caleb Markusic, 18, no address given, about 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Boardman High School. Markusic was treated for a concussion at St. Elizabeth Health Center and released Sunday.
The confrontation started after the administration of the ACT test at the school, Boardman police Capt. Jack Nichols said.
The Cardinal Mooney boys basketball team defeated Poland 48-46 Friday night, but Nichols said he did not know if the apparent assault was related to the game.
2 women report assault
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police arrested a Cameron Avenue man on charges of felonious assault, aggravated menacing and resisting arrest after they arrived at the man's house to find two women screaming that he was trying to stab them and kill them.
The two women called police early Sunday and ran down the driveway when cruisers arrived at 935 Cameron Ave.
Howard Glover, 35, then came out of the house holding a 9-month-old infant, according to police reports. Glover wrestled with police, who took the infant, and they subdued Glover with pepper spray.
The infant's mother, who is five months pregnant and lives at the same address, later told police that Glover was the father of her children and that he tried to choke her and threatened to kill her, claiming that she was cheating on him.
The second female told police she also was threatened by Glover.
Police later found blood on the walls and broken glass throughout the house, as well as a screwdriver in Glover's waistband.
Man shot in stomach
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Pointview Avenue man was shot in the stomach near Sheridan Road and South Heights Avenue early Saturday.
Justin Salata, 27, was released after being treated for the gunshot wound at St. Elizabeth Health Center, police reports show.
A woman walking to her car nearby said she saw two men arguing before the second man pulled out a gun and fired at Salata. The woman identified the shooter, who fled west on South Heights Avenue, the police report shows.
Salata said that earlier the owner of Jolly Joe's, 3718 Sheridan Road, had asked the suspect to leave because he was very loud and appeared to be intoxicated.
Salata, who was also at the bar, said he asked the man not to cause a scene, and the man responded by instigating a fight. He said he did not know the shooter.
Woman reports robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 21-year-old Tyrell Street woman told police a tall man in a black, hooded sweat shirt followed her into her apartment building Sunday afternoon and put a gun to her head, demanding money, according to police reports.
The man took a few bills from her pockets and threw the other contents of her pockets onto the floor before fleeing the scene.
Critical injuries in crash
LIBERTY -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two-car accident on Belmont Avenue that occurred Saturday evening in which two area residents were critically injured.
The accident happened just after 7 p.m. north of Station Square when the driver of a car traveling northbound, 42-year-old Thomas McConnell of Youngstown, failed to yield to oncoming traffic during a left turn. His car was then struck by car driven by Dorothy Gearhart, 57, of Warren.
Both McConnell and Gearhart were in critical condition Sunday night in St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Fire under investigation
WARREN -- The fire department is investigating a Saturday night blaze that caused at least $60,000 in damage to a house at 1238 Grant St. S.E.
The 9 p.m. fire also caused an unknown amount of heat damage to a neighboring building. There were no injuries.
Firefighters said the home had four working smoke detectors.
