Poor shooting dooms Penguins at E. Michigan
The women failed to put a player in double figures for the first time this season.
YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Youngstown State women's basketball team continued its problems shooting the ball Saturday afternoon, falling to Eastern Michigan, 69-48.
The Penguins (2-6) were competitive in the first half, shooting 38.5 percent and trailing the Eagles 32-26, but in the second half YSU made only 25.9 percent (7-of-27) and were never in the game.
The Penguins have dropped three in a row and five of their last six games.
Schloemp, Godfrey share
YSU failed to put a player in double figures for the first time this season as sophomore Jessica Schloemp and freshman Monique Godfrey led the way with seven points each.
Eastern Michigan (3-4) was led by senior Nikki Knapp with 25 points, while Sarah Vanmetre added 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Eagles outrebounded the Penguins, 48-36.
YSU had 20 turnovers in the contest, but the Eagles only scored 13 points off those mistakes. Points in the paint (38-22) and second chance points (16-7) was where the Eagles really hurt the Penguins.
The Penguins' only lead came early in the contest as they jumped out to a 4-0 margin and extended that to 7-2 on Kristy Gaudiose's 3-point goal.
Eastern Michigan came back to tie the game at 7, took the lead 9-7 on a jumper by Ryan Coleman with 16 minutes remaining in the half and never trailed again.
The Penguins tied the score at 11 and again at 13, but then the Eagles went on an 8-2 run and pulled ahead 21-15. The Penguins got no closer trailing 32-26 at the intermission.
Pulls away
In the second half Eastern Michigan pulled ahead by 10 points, 39-29, with 14:21 remaining and extended that lead to 20 points, 54-34, with 8:25 left to play.
The Eagles' biggest lead was 23 points, 62-39, at the 4:01 mark, and again, 67-44, with 1:40 remaining.
The Penguins take a week-long break for final exams and will return to action next Saturday at home against Indiana State in a 1 p.m. tip-off at Beeghly Center. The YSU men will play in the second half of that doubleheader against Duquesne University at 3:25 p.m.
