YOUNGSTOWN -- The Cardinal Mooney High School Auxiliary lines will host a "Mini" Auxiliary Camp open to sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade girls who are interested in learning the fundamentals of dance, flag or twirl. Girls may choose one area to participate in to learn the fundamentals. Interested pupils are invited to perform the fight song and half-time routines with the Cardinal Mooney Auxiliary at the Jan. 7 boys basketball game versus Cleveland Benedictine in the Cardinal Mooney gym. The camp will run from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Jan. 3, 4 and 5 in Holy Family Gym. The cost is $25 per pupil payable to: CMHS Music Boosters. That includes snacks each day, a T-shirt for each participant and all prizes awarded. Awards will be presented at the exhibition for parents at 5:15 p.m. Jan. 5 in the Holy Family gym. Local artwork on display
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The annual Area Artists Exhibit at Grove City College is open now through Tuesday in the Pew Fine Arts Center Gallery on the Grove City College campus.
The show, in its 15th year, features the work of local artists from Ellwood City, Volant, New Castle, Slippery Rock, Grove City, Butler, Greenville, Mercer, Fombell, Pittsburgh, Valencia, Stoneboro and Manassas, Va. A variety of media will be on display, including painting, pottery, photography and sculpture. The gallery is open weekdays from 1 to 4 p.m.
Training for substitutes
LISBON -- The Columbiana County Educational Service Center will hold a one-day Substitute Teacher Training program from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 5 at its offices at 38720 Saltwell Road. Cost of the training is $15 plus $20 for a background check, which must be completed before training. A continental breakfast will be provided. Participants will be responsible for their own lunches. Participants must bring official college transcripts and proof of a bachelor's degree, a driver's license or other photo ID and a check or money order for $12 written out to the "Ohio TEC" for a one-year temporary teaching certificate. Penn State Shenangonames associate director
SHARON, Pa. -- Penn State Shenango has named Beth Marhefka associate director of student affairs. Marhefka had served as a career services counselor and academic adviser at the campus since fall 2002. Earlier this year, she was presented with the winter Penn Stater of the Quarter Recognition Award. She holds a bachelor's degree in mathematical science from Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savanna, Ga., and a master of education in counseling and educational psychology from Slippery Rock University.
Kindergarten registration at Holy Family School
POLAND -- Holy Family School will hold registration for new kindergarten pupils at 9 a.m. Jan. 9 in the school office at 2731 Center Road. Children will also be scheduled for kindergarten screening at that time. Parents or guardians must bring each child's baptismal certificate, immunization records, Social Security number, copy of birth certificate and a $25 registration fee. They will also have to fill out registration forms at the time of registration.
Area administrators speak
SHARPSVILLE, Pa. -- A group of local school administrators was invited to present a program on "Using Data and the Pennsylvania Value Added Assessment System to Improve Student Achievement" at the National Staff Development Conference held in Philadelphia on Dec. 3-7. The team submitted a proposal that was selected from hundreds of submissions. Team members were: Mrs. Nancy Castor, Hempfield Elementary School, Greenville, principal; Daryl Darak, Sharpsville Area Elementary School principal; Kirk Scurpa, Sharpsville Area High School principal; Kent Williams, Sharpsville instructional technology coordinator; and Dr. Doug Hazlett, Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Services for Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV. The team presentation dealt with using the PVAAS database to improve decision-making and student achievement.
Students serve dinner
YOUNGSTOWN -- Sigma Pi Alpha, Youngstown State University's student chapter of The Society for Human Resource Management, recently prepared and served Thanksgiving dinner for 40 women and children who are living at the Youngstown YWCA. The members and their families helped supply food and other materials, while the effort also got the support of Tamarkin/Giant Eagle, Rulli Brothers, Schwebel's and Krispy Kreme.
Baby-sitting certification
BOARDMAN -- Mahoning Chapter American Red Cross, serving Hubbard, Liberty and Girard as well as Mahoning County, is offering "the best baby-sitter training in the world" for 11- to 15-year-olds. This class is designed to make better baby sitters and better big brothers and sisters as well as give these children the opportunity to earn money as certified American Red Cross baby sitters.
The next class is a two-day session from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 17 and 19. The cost is $30.
Training includes safe practices and safe play, childproofing the home, first-aid training, handling emergencies, rescue breathing for infants and toddlers, and more.
