Church plans celebration for Las Posadas
MINERAL RIDGE -- First Presbyterian Church of Mineral Ridge, 3654 Main Street, will hold a Las Posadas Celebration on Sunday. The journey will begin at 6 p.m. in the church parking lot.
In Mexico, this celebration commemorates Mary and Joseph's journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem and their search for a "room at the inn." In Spanish, posadas means lodging or shelter.
This custom was developed in the ancient Franciscan missions of Mexico and what is now the American Southwest. It has evolved into a religious and social celebration, paying festive homage to the journey of Joseph and Mary.
Participants will journey through the neighborhood streets near the church, carrying candles and singing carols. The group will be led by two young people portraying Mary and Joseph. Along the journey, the group will stop at various homes to seek lodging for the couple.
The journey will conclude at 7 at the church, where the party will take place.
