SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR
AMARILLO, Texas -- The Youngstown SteelHounds ran into an offensive juggernaut on Friday night as they gave up a season-high 10 goals to the Amarillo Gorillas en route to a 10-3 defeat, ending the Hounds' three-game winning streak.
Derek Hahn and Joey Sewell each had four points in the victory. For the Hounds, J.F. Labarre scored a pair of goals and Scott Barnes had three points.
The Gorillas (6-10-2) pressured Youngstown (9-11-1) in the first period with nine of the first 13 shots on goal.
Power-play flubs
The Hounds squandered two early power-play chances before the Gorillas took the lead with a goal from David Rattray, his fifth of the season, scored on a rebound off a Keith Rowe shot. Rowe and goaltender Shawn Degagne were credited with the assists.
Youngstown struck back at the 15:54 mark when Scott Barnes flicked a shot at the net from a tough angle that ricocheted off Degagne and into the net. It was Barnes' 10th goal of the season and extended his point streak to six games. Jonathan Gagnon and Chris Shaffer drew the assists.
The Gorillas used a defensive breakdown to regain the lead at the 17:56 mark when a failed clear attempt sprung Jeremy Kyte for his fifth goal of the season. Amarillo outshot the Hounds 16-10 as David St. Germain made 14 tough saves. Degagne made nine saves.
Amarillo continued their strong play in the second period. Derek Hahn scored a power play goal for the Gorillas in a 4-on-3 situation, giving Amarillo a 3-1 lead. Assists went to Scott Wray and Rowe.
Mark Desantis increased the lead with his fourth goal of the year at the 8:26 mark and Rich Hansen scored his fifth goal of the season, assisted by Hahn and Mark Strozda, at the 10:07 mark.
The Gorillas then had a 5-on-3 power play and Desantis seemed to score a goal but it was waived off. At the next whistle the referee conferred with the linesmen and the goal judge and changed the call to a goal making it 6-1.
Labarre scores
The Hounds came back before the end of the period with a goal by Labarre, his first of the season, with the assists going to Matt Nicholson and Barnes. The Hounds were down on the shot board 30-17 through two periods. Simon St. Pierre replaced St. Germain after Amarillo's fifth goal and stopped seven of eight shots he faced.
Hahn notched his fourth point of the game early in the period and after a pair of goals from Jason Chafe and a goal by Joey Sewell, the Hounds trailed 10-2. Labarre scored his second of the game late in the third.
The Hounds mustered 16 shots in the third period but it wasn't enough as they were outshot 42-33.
