Richie of 'Simple Life'sticks to her single life
NEW YORK -- Nicole Richie and her fianc & eacute;, Adam Goldstein, have called off their nine-month engagement.
Richie's publicist, Cindy Guagenti, confirmed to The Associated Press on Wednesday that the couple have split. She said the breakup had been in the works for several days, but would not give any further details.
The split was first reported by "Access Hollywood" and Us Weekly magazine.
Richie, co-star of the reality series "The Simple Life," and Goldstein, a professional club DJ who goes by the name DJ AM, had dated for a year before becoming engaged last February.
Richie, the 24-year-old daughter of R & amp;B crooner Lionel Richie, will begin shooting the fourth season of "Simple Life" early next year. Richie and her co-star and ex-friend, Paris Hilton, have feuded publicly in the past year.
The new format of "The Simple Life" will air on E! -- not Fox -- and will allow Richie and Hilton to remain separated. They will each take turns playing a "wife" and running households, with the family involved each week deciding which did a better job.
Hilton announced in October that she was ending her own engagement to Greek shipping heir Paris Latsis.
'Friends' star Schwimmerto make Broadway debut
NEW YORK -- David Schwimmer will make his Broadway debut in a revival of "The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial," Herman Wouk's stage adaptation of his best-selling novel that later became a hit movie.
The courtroom drama will open May 7 at a theater to be announced, with preview performances to begin April 14. Schwimmer will play the role of Lt. Barney Greenwald in the production, which will be directed by Jerry Zaks.
Zeljko Ivanek will co-star as the infamous Lt. Com. Philip Francis Queeg, a role played in the movie version by Humphrey Bogart.
Schwimmer, one of the stars of the long-running television series "Friends," has extensive stage credits, particularly in Chicago where he was a co-founder of the Lookingglass Theatre Company.
"The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial" originally opened on Broadway in 1954 starring Henry Fonda as Greenwald and Lloyd Nolan as Queeg.
Jazz great's saxophonenets big bucks at auction
PARIS -- Jazz great Sidney Bechet's soprano saxophone sold at auction in Paris for more than $140,000.
The instrument, which Bechet used to compose many of his standards, inspired the highest bid among 32 pieces up for sale at the Hotel Drouot auction house Wednesday. The selling price, including fees, was $140,900, the auction house said.
A handwritten love letter from the New Orleans jazzman to his wife, Jacqueline, sold for $2,817. Golden cuff links decorated with the initials "SB" went for $2,957.
Daniel Bechet, a drummer who lives in France, organized the auction to finance a foundation dedicated to his father's memory. Born in New Orleans in 1897, the clarinet and saxophone player died in France in 1959.
