COLLEGE HOOPS Top 25 games
No. 9 Gonzaga 67, Washington St. 53
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Adam Morrison scored 25 points despite strong defensive pressure. J.P. Batista added 23 points for Gonzaga (5-2), which was held 18 points below its season average. Washington State (4-2), of the Pacific-10, has lost seven straight to nearby rival Gonzaga of the West Coast Conference. The Zags have won 28 straight at home, the second longest streak in the nation. The Cougars fell to 5-107 all-time against teams ranked in the Top Ten. Gonzaga led the entire game, although Washington State stayed about 10 points down for much of the contest. Batista exploited WSU's inside defense, going 9-of-11 from the field and adding nine rebounds. Morrison, who leads the nation in scoring at 29.7 points per game, was 8-of-16 from the field. Sean Mallon added 12 points for Gonzaga, which shot 54 percent. Derrick Low and Ivory Clark, WSU's top two scorers, were held to three and zero points, respectively. Robbie Cowgill had 14 points for the Cougars, who were 20-of-53 from the field (37 percent).
No. 11 Illinois 58, Georgetown 48
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Dee Brown scored 16 points and Illinois' defense made up for a poor shooting night as the Illini won their ninth straight. Brown made two layups midway through the second half that boosted Illinois' lead to 14 points and stalled Georgetown's comeback attempt. The Hoyas (3-2), who were down 15 points at halftime, rallied behind Jeff Green, who scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half.
But Georgetown ran out of time. After closing to 52-44 on Ashanti Cook's 3-pointer with 1:10 to go, the Hoyas missed three straight shots, were forced to foul and the Illini converted all six free throws before Green scored four points in the final seconds. James Augustine got his fourth double-double of the season for Illinois with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Cook scored 10 points for the Hoyas. Illinois was only 9-of-25 from the field in the second half and finished the game shooting a paltry 32 percent. They were helped by nine 3-pointers.
No. 19 George Washington 70, Florida International 45
WASHINGTON -- Pops Mensah-Bonsu had 15 points and eight rebounds in his best game since returning from suspension, and George Washington played strong defense to beat Florida International. Mike Hall added 13 points and 10 rebounds as GW improved to 6-0, its best start since the 1992-93 squad opened 7-0 on its way to the NCAA tournament's round of 16. Omar Williams had 13 points for the Colonials, who pulled away in the first half while holding Florida International (3-3) without a field goal for 8 1/2 minutes. GW, coming off a victory over No. 21 Maryland on Monday, limited the visitors to 31 percent shooting for the game, including 1-for-16 on 3-pointers. The Colonials also kept in check Sun Belt Conference player of the week Ivan Almonte, who averaged 19 points and 17 rebounds in wins over South Florida and Florida Tech.
